哈特福德是美国康涅狄格州的首府，在州内的中部偏北，依康涅狄格河而立。市内设有许多保险公司，是世界保险业的大本营。据2000年普查，当地人口为12万1578人。2005年的最新普查结果，人口增长至12万4397人，是康州在布里奇波特和纽黑文之后的第三大城市。大哈特福德地区有人口118万4241人，是州内最大的都市圈。84号州际公路与91号州际公路在此交会。 在荷兰探险家阿德里安·布洛克于1614年探索至此地后，新尼德兰殖民地于1623年开始在位于康涅狄格河和公园河的霍普堡进行毛皮贸易，但是到1654年这里就被放弃了。而今日这附近依然以曾经的荷兰据点而闻名。第一批英国移民于1635年抵达，他们把这里称作“纽镇”，并与1637年更名为哈特福德。这个名字取自英国赫特福德郡的赫特福德，其中一个移民塞缪尔·斯通的故乡。
