Our vacation was a package, arranged by Cameron Guthrie of Costa Rican Vacations. Here is his number: 1-800-606-1860 /ext 1224. Our guide, Jairo, was used for both a day hike and a night hike in the cloud forest, and he was excellent. We also used Jairo and a driver to take us to Poas volcano and other attractions. All arranged through Cameron. We think his tour packages were very well designed and good value for the cost.

Yes, you can tour the Cloud Forest without staying at the Villa Blanca Hotel. It is not a requirement to stay at the hotel facility, since the hotel is inside the cloud forest reserve. However, you should probably take into account that this is a pretty remote location and the GPS you typically get at car rental locations does not pick up this particular reserve or hotel, so it is easy to get lost. You have to turn off the main road from Arenal/LaFortuna and travel on a bumpy, pot hole laden gravel road for about 15 miles in order to get to the reserve and hotel. We had to call the place to get directions, and then continued to ask locals if we were on the right road, b/c it was literally out in the middle of nowhere and the nearest town is San Ramon, which is about 25 miles away! If you leave Arenal in the early morning after breakfast, you would probably arrive at the cloud forest reserve around noon or early afternoon. While you can hike the cloud forest trails on your own, you get so much more out of the experience if you book a guided tour. The guides are very knowledgeable, and point out so many things I would have otherwise missed. They also have a wonderful hummingbird garden where you can see lots of birds coming to feed. By the time you tour the cloud forest and possibly visit the hummingbird feeders, it will be late afternoon, and would probably be a long way to your southwest destination. So, my advice, would be to spend the night. Although it is a remote location, the resort is in a gorgeous location, with clean, comfortable rooms, so it is well worth an overnight stay for the full cloud forest experience. Their complimentary breakfast is included in the price of the hotel. Look on their website for rates. Good luck!

Hi!! The Villa Blanca Hotel & Resort is located INSIDE the El Silencio de Los Angeles Cloud Forest Reserve, so you don't need to travel anywhere to get there. You are already there! There are trails all over the property located relatively near the lodge area. Some trails are longer than others. But in addition to the trails, there are other acitivities to do. I milked a cow and bottled fed two newborn calves. It was a neat experience. I also scheduled a guided tour through the jungle to photograph the elusive quetzal birds found nearby. It was a wonderful stay!
