Aurora Alert: Geomagnetic storm could bring northern lights as far south as Michigan and Maine this week
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm conditions on the evening of Thursday (Feb. 13) and high activity throughout Friday (Feb. 14), as a fast-moving solar wind stream heads for Earth.

The northern lights are best seen between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, according to NOAA, which recommends traveling to a high vantage point away from light pollution. If conditions are optimal, aurora borealis may be seen as far as 620 miles away.
Northern Lights May Be Visible in Several States Today
Washington, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, as well as parts of Idaho and South Dakota, appear within the low-to-medium range of NOAA's predicted "view line," which represents "the southern-most locations from which you may see the aurora on the northern horizon."
