Descendants make historic return to Stagville Plantation in Durham: It's an emotional trip'now known by the family as 'The Trek,' began in 1844 when enslaver Paul Cameron ordered 114 enslaved people to walk from Stagville to his newly-purchased cotton plantation in western Alabama.
Though there have been several versions of the message circulating, several of the messages include individuals’ names, references to picking cotton, plantations, slavery, and even racial slurs.
