Netflix has added support for HDR10 Plus – a move that will finally allow Samsung TV owners to take better advantage of their device’s ability to stream with better clarity and color. The streaming service now offers HDR10 Plus through its Premium plan, with the format accounting for around 50 percent of “eligible viewing hours.”

AV1 is the standard for streaming 4K video without consuming vast amounts of data, and has been in use by Netflix for some time. AV1-SDR is now, according to the company, second only to H.264/AVC in terms of codec popularity, which isn’t bad going as that’s been in use for more than 20 years.

Netflix says that it is enabling HDR10+ with the AV1 codec that was released in 2018. This codec was originally adopted by Netflix to lower the amount of data customers use when streaming 4K content on phones. But the codec works just as well on large HDR files.
