A Texas county on Wednesday approved holding an election sought by SpaceX that would let residents living around billionaire Elon Musk 's company decide whether to formally create a new city called Starbase.

Cameron County officials approved an election for May 3 that would let residents, who mostly work for Musk, create a city around his company’s launch site.

If a majority of the roughly 500 residents living around the South Texas site vote yes in May, Starbase will be the state’s newest city.
