Leh and Ladakh both lie in the Seismic Zone-IV of the country, which means they are at a very high risk in terms of vulnerability to earthquakes.

Kargil has so far remained out of railway connectivity. The government has been making efforts to lay railway tracks to Kargil, which would provide India a strategic advantage in the topmost region.
