Het AFAS Stadion werd in augustus 2006 geopend als opvolger van de Alkmaarderhout. Bij de opening had het stadion een capaciteit van 17.023 toeschouwers. Het toenmalige DSB Stadion werd geopend met een vriendschappelijke duel tegen het Engelse Arsenal.
