Karnad makes of the leitmotiv of the play, ‘prayer’, in the scene where the Muslim chieftains along with Sheik Shams-ud-din, a pacifist priest, conspire to murder Tughlaq while at prayer. The use of prayer for murder is reminiscent of what Tughlaq himself did to kill his father.

Girish Karnad has been in the forefront of modern Indian theatre since the spectacular success of his much celebrated play Tughlaq , written in the Kannada language and translated into English by the author himself in 1972. One of the twenty-three official languages of India, Kannada belongs to the family of Dravidian languages.

Tughlaq is Girish Karnad’s second play after Yayati. Tughlaq was first published in 1964 in Kannada. Later on, the play has been translated into Urdu, English and many other Indian languages. The English translation of Tughlaq has been done by Karnad himself after being requested by Alyque Padamsee.
