The InterStellar Medium (ISM) is a complex mixture of materials: tendrils of hot, tenuous gas at temperatures of millions of degrees, threading through large regions of gas and dust at moderate temperatures, and studded here and there with dense clouds inside which the temperature drops to 100 K or even lower.
