Thomas Edmund Dewey (March 24, 1902 – March 16, 1971) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 47th Governor of New York from 1943 to 1954. He was the Republican Party's nominee for president of the United States in 1944 and 1948, losing the latter election to Harry S. Truman in a major upset.

In 1948 Dewey once again secured the Republican nomination and ran for president, this time against President Harry S. Truman (1884–1972; served 1945–53). Despite his efforts in ending World War II and guiding the United States and its allies into a new postwar period, Truman entered the 1948 presidential campaign as the underdog.

A prominent lawyer and district attorney in New York City (1937–41), Dewey went on to serve as governor of New York from 1943 to 1955. He ran for president on the Republican ticket unsuccessfully in 1944 and 1948.
