A volar splint is device applied to immobilize the wrist and hand. The volar splint does not prevent pronation or supination. If these motions should be immobilized, a sugar tong splint should be used. The patient should be positioned so that the operator has appropriate access to the patient's affected hand.

The volar wrist splint is best used as an intermediate immobilization when some residual hand motion is retained. It is unsuitable for a nonfunctional hand with severe flexion deformities because of the pain and skin maceration risk.
