The Fredonian Rebellion was a brief and unsuccessful uprising which, nevertheless, had a profound influence on Texas history. The primary mover behind the rebellion was Haden Edwards, the empresario of Nacogdoches from 1825 to 1826, who was in charge of bringing in new settlers to the region.

The Texas Legislature authorized the creation of public schools for Freedmen's Town by 1870. The Gregory Institute, named after Edgar M. Gregory, opened in 1872. Gregory was an officer in the Union army in the U.S. Civil War and the assistant commissioner of the Texas area's Freedmen's Bureau.

He quickly completed an undergraduate degree in chemistry and returned to Huntsville to teach physical science, biology, and physics at his alma mater, Samuel Walker Houston High School.
