Here are seven more projects that bring modernism (and occasionally postmodernism) to mosques — each with their own contemporary twist… Islamic Cultural Center and Museum of Tolerance by BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group, Tirana, Albania. BIG Architects won a competition to design a mosque, Islamic center and museum in Tirana, Albania.

Even so, AARCO Architects has set out to prove that it is possible to design a modern mosque that speaks to the younger Islamic generation while respecting those age-old traditions. In the last over 35 years, AARCO unveiled plans for a contemporary mosque in Srilanka, displaying a sculptural cluster of domes in a felicitous mix of Islamic styles.

These comprise a number of interconnected stone and marble columns, linked together through arches. They surround the platform housing the Dome of the Rock, facilitating accessibility for worshippers as well as serving a decorative function. They are: Southern Arch: Built during Abbasid era and renovated during the Fatimid and Ottoman eras.

The mosque, masjid in Arabic, is the Muslim gathering place for prayer. Masjid simply means “place of prostration.” Though most of the five daily prayers prescribed in Islam can take place anywhere, all men are required to gather together at the mosque for the Friday noon prayer.
