The Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret at 9a St Thomas Street is a museum of surgical history and one of the oldest surviving operating theatres. It is located in the garret of St Thomas's Church, Southwark, in London, on the original site of St Thomas' Hospital. [3]

We are open every Thursday-Sunday from 10.30am until 5pm, with last admission at 4.15pm. On occasion we may close the Museum early due to a group visit. An average length of visit is about 45 minutes, although visitors are welcome to stay for longer.

The Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret is situated in the roof space of St Thomas’ Church. The Church was dedicated to St Thomas Beckett and it probably originated as a chapel of the medieval hospital, but it is not known when it was first built on the present site.

Housed in the attic of the early eighteenth-century church of the old St Thomas’ Hospital, this atmospheric museum offers a unique insight into the history of medicine and surgery. The original timber framed Herb Garret was once used to dry and store herbs for patients’ medicines and in 1822 an operating theatre was included.

Explore the stepped wooden surgical theatre and original timber framed garret where lifesaving operations took place on the wooden operating table between 1822 and 1862. Operations were carried out between midday and 1pm to make the most of the natural daylight streaming through the theatre’s skylight.
