The largest flow ever recorded on the Potomac at Washington, DC, was 425,000 cubic feet per second in March, 1936. The lowest flow ever recorded at the same location was 600 cfs in September, 1966. After assassinating President Lincoln in April of 1865, John Wilkes Booth attempted to escape by crossing the Potomac by boat.

During periods of drought, the Cooperative Water Supply Operations on the Potomac (CO-OP) helps manage the Washington metropolitan area water supply system by coordinating withdrawals from the Potomac River and off-river reservoirs and recommending releases from upstream reservoirs when forecasted flow in the river is not sufficient to meet ...

At present, there is sufficient flow in the Potomac River to meet the Washington metropolitan area’s water demands without releasing water from upstream reservoirs. If low-flow conditions further develop, the Washington metropolitan area is protected from a water supply shortage owing to carefully designed drought-contingency plans.

This system provides flood forecasts for the tidal region of the Potomac River spanning from Lewsieta to Little Falls covering the Washington Metropolitan region, including coastal areas of the National Capital, Alexandria and Arlington.
