"B" Battery Replacement. I recently purchased a couple of old battery-powered tube radios on eBay with the idea of using their cases to house a transistor radio project. But these radios were so nice that I couldn't bring myself to tear out the insides! Instead, I decided to refurbish them.

Antique Radio B-Battery Power Supply: Early vacuum tube (valve) radios ran off of batteries instead of house current. These antique radios required two different batteries for operation, an "A" and a "B" battery.

If you connect a new B battery to your radio, be sure to make the right positive and negative connections, especially if the battery terminals don't match the connectors in your radio. A simple substitute for the traditional 90-volt B supply is to connect ten 9-volt number 216 "transistor radio" batteries in series.

In the following I show how to build an inexpensive 63 Volt battery with the same size as an original 67.5 Volt battery using seven conventional 9 Volt batteries. The new battery can be easily assembled and disassembled without the need of any soldering and can use a wide variety of 9 Volt batteries including rechargeable ones.
