One of the key components to how they look is the exterior stone cladding for your walls, and that can also be a significant budget expense.

For stone castles, skilled stonemasons would be employed to quarry, shape, and lay the stones. Initially, rough-hewn stones would be used as the foundation, forming a solid base. The walls and towers would be constructed using carefully shaped and fitted stones held together with mortar or dry-stone techniques.

Building a stone castle sometimes led to the need to form brand new quarries in the vicinity of the build site. Many European castles were built exclusively from earth and timber. There are examples of several such castles that were maintained in operational state for 400-500 years.

Not surprisingly, a stone castle took a great deal longer to complete than any earth and timber stronghold. Major construction work occurred only from April to November, and was directly dependent on weather conditions. The building process itself was cumbersome, and estimated rate of ten feet of elevation per year (Fry 1981).
