I decided to really go for it and do a large glazed painting. These skies for me are about unlimited opportunity and emotional and spiritual connection, so what better way to connect than really put myself out there. The size was intimidating at first, but I’m getting the hang of it now. The color will go on in thin glazes after I’m done with the underpainting. This is just the first layer of underpainting. This painting is called “Breaking Through” because I had to totally break through my ideas of what is possible to make it. This is my largest fully glazed painting to date (all the color is put on through thin glazes one after another, like the Old Masters did.). I did this because I wanted to capture a truly beautiful sunset, where the clouds looked three dimensional and light, but had colors transitioning from one to another effortlessly the way they do in sunsets.
