Crucible was once a mighty steelmaker. The mill has deep roots in Central New York that date back to 1876. It got its famous name in 1900 when 13 steel companies Crucible Steel Co. of America. In its heyday in the mid-1980s, Crucible employed 1,400 people. Now, only 170 people work for the mill. And in mere weeks, the entire 1.5-million-square-foot mill could shut down and lay off its whole workforce — this time permanently.
