Hey Pool Owners! Which type of shock should you use in your pool: chlorine shock or non-chlorine shock? Chlorine shock is a powerful, super-concentrated dose of chlorine that helps kill algae growth and bacteria. But it’s a harsh chemical and you’ll have to wait at least 8 hours before swimming again. Non-chlorine shock is great to help refresh your sanitizer, but it won’t battle bigger issues like algae. So for regular maintenance, use non-chlorine shock. And for serious issues and problematic

Hey Pool Owners! If you’ve got algae in your pool, you need to add chlorine shock to your water ASAP. But how much shock you need depends on the color of the algae. A normal dose of chlorine shock is usually 1 pound per 10,000 gallons of water. If you have light green algae, you’ll need to add a double dose of shock. If you have dark green algae, add a triple dose of shock. And if you have black-green algae, you’ll have to add a quadruple dose. Follow us at Swim University for more pool care tip

Hey Pool Owners! Are you adding the wrong amount of shock to your pool? A regular dose of chlorine shock is 1 pound per 10,000 gallons of water. But if you’ve got algae starting to form in your water or your combined chlorine levels are high, you’ll want to double that. And if you’ve got serious issues like dark green water, you’ll need a triple dose. Shocking with a regular dose once a week can help prevent these problems in the first place. Hey pool owners! Is your chlorine “dead” in the water? When chlorine combines with contaminants, it becomes combined chlorine. And that chlorine isn’t as effective at killing off contaminants. Combined chlorine is also known as chloramines, which gives off that nasty chlorine-like smell in your water. So if you smell chlorine, it actually means you don’t have enough active chlorine in the water. You can get rid of that used-up chlorine by shocking your water with a chlorine or non-chlorine shock

Hey Pool Owners! Here are 3 things that’ll keep your chlorine levels from fluctuating: #1. Keep Your Cyanuric Acid Levels Between 30 and 50 PPM. If these are too low, your chlorine will get destroyed by the sun. Too high and your chlorine won’t sanitize as well. #2. Shock Your Pool Weekly. Adding an oxidizer or non-chlorine shock to your water each week will help refresh your free chlorine. That’ll keep it working in your water longer. #3. Keep Your Water Circulating. If your water isn’t circula

Hey Pool Owners! When most people think about salt water pools, they think “No more chlorine.” And that’s actually COMPLETELY WRONG. A salt water system, also known as a salt water generator or salt chlorine generator, turns salt that’s added to your water into chlorine. That’s right: your salt water pool still has chlorine in the water! But instead of adding the chlorine directly yourself, you’re adding salt to your water and the generator does the work. So while you’ll never have to buy chlori

Hey Pool Owners! How often should you be shocking your pool? Adding shock to your water once a week will help kill contaminants and refresh your chlorine levels. Which is Better For Your Hot Tub: Chlorine or Non-Chlorine Shock? You can use either one, no matter if you sanitize with chlorine, salt, minerals, or even bromine. Chlorine shock can kill contaminants like bacteria and algae. It breaks down organic matter, which can clear up cloudy water. But it's so powerful and concentrated you'll have to wait a few hours to use your hot tub after adding it. On the other hand... Non-Chlorine Shock, AKA oxidizer, helps reactivate the chlorine or bromine already
